INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - After throwing his first complete game of the season, Cleveland State junior Josh Hungerman has been named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week. The league office made the announcement on Monday, May 19. Hungerman, who is earning the award for the second time this season, allowed just one run on four hits and struck out eight to lead the Vikings to a 3-1 win at Butler in the series opener on Friday (May 16) afternoon. The victory snapped a season-high six-game losing streak for CSU. Hungerman gave up a run in the first inning, but the Bulldogs did not score the rest of the way. "This is a well deserved honor for Josh," head coach Kevin Kocks said. "He pitched a great game and really had control of his pitches. He kept our defense on its toes and we made all the routine plays behind him." Hungerman, who will likely be CSU's starting pitcher when the Vikings begin the Horizon League Championship against Milwaukee on Wednesday, finished the regular season with a 5-3 record and a 4.94 ERA. He ranks second in the league with 60 strikeouts, including a league-leading 25 batters struck out looking. The Vikings will be back in action on Wednesday (May 21) when fourth-seeded CSU plays fifth-seeded Milwaukee in the opening round of the Horizon League Championship. First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m. at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio. |
